Your Guide to a Top-Rated Golf Vacation in Sisters
Sisters, Oregon is filled with lakes and mountains and is perfect for hiking, biking, fishing, birding and horseback riding. Exploring is a way of life in Sisters Country where there is an adventure at every turn including unique shopping, exciting events and even championship golf!
There are two courses for world-class golf in Sisters —Black Butte Ranch and Aspen Lakes. Both offer great spots to get some tee time in with striking Oregon landscapes for backdrops.
Aspen Lakes Golf Course
Aspen Lakes is a top-ranked golf course in Oregon situated about five minutes from the town of Sisters. The course offers stunning views, signature red-sand bunkers and outstanding golf. The Cyrus family acquired more than 1,000 acres adjacent to the family farm in 1988 to turn the golf course from idea to reality.
Golf course architect William Overdorf designed the first nine holes that were developed and opened in 1996. He carefully and beautifully sculpted the Sisters golf course into the topography of this Central Oregon property. Many natural features were incorporated as construction unfolded in order to preserve as much of the existing landscape as possible.
In 1999, the second nine holes at Aspen Lakes opened and the world saw what would become the signature red sand for the bunkers. Regular sand that other courses in the region used was hauled in from out of state, but environmentally-friendly ideals revealed using local materials would be the best option. The red sand came from red cinders occurring naturally on the Cyrus property and it was simply crushed down into sand.
Standing in contrast to the colors of Aspen Lakes—green grassy fairways, blue skies and even white, snowy mountains—the red sand bunkers are eye-pleasing and a talking point for golfers enjoying this course and its experience.
A member of the Central Oregon Golf Trail, Aspen Lakes Golf Course was named the area’s Favorite Golf Course in a poll conducted by The Band Bulletin newspaper. The course also took the “Player’s Choice” award by Northwest Golf Guys. Numerous other awards have been bestowed upon Aspen Lakes which now also sports a lovely restaurant. The venue is both a top-notch golf course for locals and visitors, and a breathtaking wedding venue.
Black Butte Ranch
Black Butte Ranch offers some of the state’s best golf with two challenging yet distinctive championship courses showcasing the beautiful landscape of Central Oregon. Fairways are woven throughout Aspen Groves and Ponderosa Pines framing magnificent photo-like views of the Cascade Mountains.
The first of the two courses is award-winning Big Meadow Course, designed by Robert Muir Graves and popular with Oregon golfers. The course is more than 7,000 yards of championship tees with sprawling fairways. Sweeping cape-and-bay bunkers with elevated green complexes offers golfers a test no matter the skill level. Big Meadow Course is set to begin a $1.3-million improvement with a new irrigation system ensuring the course operates in optimum condition.
The most iconic course in Central Oregon is perhaps Glaze Meadow Golf Course. The course reopened in 2012 after a $3.75-million renovation by architect John Fought, much to the delight of golfers near and far. Deep grass-faced bunkers, square tee boxes and slightly elevated greens offer a golf experience like none other.
After you’ve played 18 holes, you’ll need comfortable accommodations to relax and recount the competition with friends, so check vacation rentals in Sisters for the perfect blend of comfort and affordability.
