4 Great Attractions Less than an Hour from Sisters

Chris Smith | 10.06.22

When you’re planning a trip, location is everything. The greatest destinations are both charming and convenient, offering you easy access to the best attractions an area has to offer. After all, who wants to drive hours to a new destination after traveling to your vacation rental?

Charm and convenience are two things Sisters, Oregon does well. The town is vibrant, its quaint streets lined with authentic Old West architecture and small-town hospitality. Nestled between the magnificent Cascade Mountains and miles of undisturbed high desert, it’s a mecca of outdoor adventure. And standing proudly in the heart of Central Oregon, it’s less than an hour away from some of the area’s best activities and attractions.

HooDoo Ski Resort

27400 Big Lake Road

Sisters, Oregon 97759

Sisters is actually the home of HooDoo Ski Resort, Central Oregon’s original – and still most popular – winter sports destination. Just a short 20-mile drive from the city on the summit of Santiam Pass, HooDoo offers more than 800 acres of terrain, 32 challenging runs, 5 convenient lifts, and one of the largest tubing parks in the western region. Visitors can shred the slopes on skis or snowboards; get some air at the autobahn tubing park; explore the winter terrain on a Nordic adventure and more.

No matter where you stay in Sisters, you’ll enjoy easy access to the resort’s world-class winter fun. You’ll be even closer in one of our great Black Butte Ranch rentals

Smith Rock State Park

Terrebonne, Oregon, 97760

Located about 29 miles East of Sisters on Highway 97, Smith Rock State Park can be tricky to find – but the reward is worth the work. The birthplace of American sport climbing, the famous state park is known for its towering rock spires, sheer basalt cliffs, and deep river canyons. It’s a prime place for rock climbing, with close to 2000 routes ranging from easy to expert. Other popular activities include hiking (there are 12 official trails), biking, horseback riding, and slacklining.

High Desert Museum

5900 US-97

Bend, Oregon 97702

About 35 minutes southeast of Sisters on the outskirts of Bend lies the High Desert Museum, a fun and unique attraction that explores the history, life, and culture of Oregon’s high desert region. Consistently rated the area’s top attraction, the High Desert Museum combines educational exhibits, animal encounters, interactive displays, hands-on programs and more as it blends the natural world and cultural history into an exciting educational event.

Newberry National Volcanic Monument

Bend, Oregon 97702

Visitors to Sisters enjoy a unique opportunity to explore Central Oregon’s ancient lava lands. 33 miles south of the city in the Deschutes National Forest, the Newberry National Volcanic Monument includes 55,000 acres of lakes, lava flows, and other geological wonders. Visitors can hike interpretive trails, scale volcanic peaks, explore underground lava tubes and search for scenic waterfalls.
